At Tanfield School we have many minds but one mission: to get students to attend the best university, or real alternative, succeed in their dream job and thrive in all aspects of their life.

We are a knowledge rich school which means we have a curriculum which is sequenced to build powerful knowledge, integral to this is our belief in teaching to the top. Our bespoke curriculum resources are designed by specialist teachers and target high achievement for all.

With a caring and nurturing environment, we welcome visits to ensure that you can see the school in action. Throughout the academic year families can arrange a tour of the school to see students learning. We also host Open Events which allow Year 4, 5 and 6 students to visit our school with their families. These events include; a presentation from Mr Clough, a tour of the school and a sample of our lunches.

Admissions process

If your son/daughter is at school in County Durham you will receive a letter during September from the admissions team at Durham County Council. These letters are distributed by primary schools.

Children are no longer required to attend the closest secondary school to their home address. You can express up to 3 preferences for your child to be admitted into a secondary school of your choice. Tanfield School is a small school which can accommodate up to 162 students in 2023's Year 7. We are a popular school and, as consideration is given to all applications received by the deadline of 31st October, we would encourage you to submit your application by that date.

If you live outside of County Durham you can still apply to Tanfield School, but you will need to complete the form provided by your Local Authority. The process is very similar to the one above and, again, we are more than happy to offer support to you throughout the process, either by personal or telephone contact.

If you would like to know more about the school or the application process, please contact us via email at transition@tanfieldschool.co.uk or telephone on 01207 232 881.
